Regular ferry from El Nido to Coron Travel Tips

There are some essential travel tips that I have for you if you decide to take the regular ferry, from sleeping, eating and not getting dehydrated. Read carefully so you can have as much as a comfortable journey as possible.

The ferry from El Nido to Coron takes a long time

Weirdly, local folks will keep telling you the journey takes five hours. That is a lie I’m afraid. This is a ferry ruled by the weather gods and lovely laid back Filipinos. Journeys take around 8 to 10 hours. Be prepared to entertain yourself. There is WiFi on board but it’s like the Loch Ness monster: It’s apparently meant to be there but very few people have seen it.

Surfaces are hard, really hard

There is one continuous bench on either side of the boat from El Nido to Coron for everyone to sit on. Yet soon enough, people want to take a kip and lie down. This is gonna be on the floor. There are signs everywhere telling you not to use your life vest as a pillow. Lots of people try to do it but the captain will come by and take them right back off you soon enough. Try and use your bag or something folded to keep you comfy.

You’ll be fed on the ferry from El Nido to Coron

Lunch is served and the food is good! What you’re given is what you get though. There’s no vegetarian option so for the animal friendly folks out there, you may wanna pack your lunch. The food is rice, vegetables and meat and the portion size is good! You’re also given fruit for desert. All yummy, all good, no stomach surprises.

Wear sunscreen or sit below deck!

It sounds like a no-brainer but Teacake came off the boat like a little roast pork. Many people sat up top excited to fly through the waves and act like pirates discovering new islands for the first time. I did this too but a) There’s barely any cover b) The sun’s heat is ridiculous c) You need to apply suntan continuously d) You might fall asleep (oh yes I did).

Bring water and drink it like a fish

There’s nothing for sale on this boat. Nothing. You’ll be given one bottle of water and that’s it. Make sure you’re stocked up like you’re running a marathon. If you’ve been drinking the night before, you might just hate yourself a little bit (oh yes I did).

I hope this has answered all of your questions about how to get to Coron from El Nido. If you need help, do not hesitate to leave a comment below. I keep a close eye on these services to make your journey as easy as it can be – and can find out the answer for you.

You have travel insurance right?

I know a number of you have expressed worries about taking these boats. With any adventure, there is always a chance that something could happen (but let’s face it, you could hurt yourself making vegetable soup in the kitchen). Regardless, travel insurance whilst having the time of your life is ESSENTIAL. Check travel insurance prices with World Nomads here.

What Really Is The Best Way To Ferry From El Nido To Coron?

  • Hi Alice
We’re going to El Nido from Coron. I have read everything you wrote and everybody’s comments as well. But I didn’t see any mention of cabins/beds available. I am a very poor sea traveller. I get seasick unless I am horizontal on any boat/ship. Also, to save time and hotel fee, I want to travel overnight. Is there any ferry that does overnight crossing? Thanks.

    1. Hi Al. I do not think there are any boats going overnight :( And as for cabins and beds…I don’t think they deem the journey long enough for this. There was space for people to lie horizontal on the boat I was on – but this is hardly luxury. You essentially find a space on the bench or the floor and take it. This is what everyone leaned towards doing. I really do feel for you though – I get terribly seasick – even on a pedalo boat!

  • Hey Alice, great write up!

My friends and I are visiting Coron then making our way down to El Nido. Could you recommend if we should pre book accommodation or book when we get there? We normally just wing it but I’m a little nervous this time around.

    1. Hi Sheamon! The off-peak season is May to September. If you’re planning to travel outside of this, you might not mean you get your first choice and the best location. For the best deals, I highly recommend booking your accommodation with Agoda before you go (then if you change your mind, you can easily cancel). Have a great journey!

  • Hello,
Me and my partner are going to the Philippines in January. We are staying in El Nido for 4 days and then looking to get the fast ferry to Coron to stay for 3 days.
Would you recommend that we book the fast ferry online now at https://www.facebook.com/montenegroinc/ (which adds lots of fees + my bank fees) or would you recommend to book it once we are there?
We would really like the fast ferry as it wont cut into our first day in Coron.
    Do they sell out quickly?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Teri! It’s a bit of a tough call! If time is of the essence to you, you don’t mind the charges, and you want 100% peace of mind (well almost 100% – the boats can be cancelled at any minute) then it might be worth it. However, as you’re in El Nido for 4 days, I feel you should be fine buying your ticket once you’re there. Sending good luck vibes to you for a smooth and easy transfer to Coron!

  • Hi Alice,
Your blog is so helpful..! If you had only 5 nights and had to split your time between Coron and El Nido, how would you split it i.e. 2 in Coron, 3 in El Nido? We don’t have our dive certs so will only be scuba diving. We are staying in Coron first, then the fast ferry to El Nido
    Thanks,
    Andie :)

    1. Hey Andrea. Ooooooh good question! The only thing to watch out for is that ferry. It can be cancelled at short notice and take longer than you think! Coron is amazing for diving – if you just want to snorkel, El Nido has endless opportunities. Is this what you are asking? You say you don’t have your diving certificates but are scuba diving, so I’m a little confused ><

      1. That’s what you get for staying up late researching your holiday haha! I meant we will only be snorkelling! Have decided on 2 nights in Coron and 4 nights in El Nido, flying into Coron from Cebu then taking the ferry to El Nido :)

      2. Hi Alice
Your blog definitely helped us when we went to Coron & el nido back in May. We stayed at Sunzine inn. Great for a price! Their restaurant had good food so don’t bother with downtown restaurants unless you know a really high end cafe etc. So thank you! And you’re right, the ferry was over 10 hours instead of 8 as advertised haha! And by the way, no lunch was served on ferry just fyi. This was the “fast” ferry. Also, be prepared for a “less” than clean toilet on ferry haha! It got broken while we were on it. But the reserved/assigned seats were awesome! Ferrying from Coron to el nido was a nice sightseeing but we flew from el nido to Cebu. They recently just had a cheap deal where you can fly straight from el nido to Boracay (just fyi). But Cebu was great! Stayed at best western hotel. They had a roof top gym, pool & bar. Definitely worth the price for 66 a night. Oops I’m yakking on & on lol. Have a great day Alice!

      3. Hello! My husband and I are also planning on going to the phillipines in May. We are planning on taking the ferry from coron to el nido and wondering if we should book now, or wait til we get there and try and find someone to book it with 1 or 2 days before. What was your experience and if you did book online what company? Thanks!

      4. That helps a ton thank you! What about flights for island hopping? would you suggest I buy them now or the day of in the airport to get the best price?

      5. Hi Alyssa – there is no flight between Coron and El Nido – can you tell me what flights you mean? Generally speaking, it’s best to book your flights sooner rather than later! I’m not sure where you’re enquiring about flying to and from though :) Let me know and I can help.

      6. we were thinking puerto princessa to cebu, cebu to davao (my husband has a friend there) or siargao, and then davao to legaspi

      7. Hey Alyssa – oh yikes if it is May we’re talking, in my experience and many others, book ASAP! I recommend the Skyscanner app to search for the best deals!

For hostels, you can certainly try and bargain face to face with the owners to get a better deal. Peak season in El Nido is December to April. You might be OK as you’re going in May – but if you want the reassurance that you’re arriving and definitely have somewhere to sleep, Hostelworld will give you the best prices. Good luck! :)

      8. Also, what about for hostels, I heard they get booked pretty quickly in el nido, but could we get a better price from them upon arrival rather than booking online?
